Excerpt Part 3: Something's Not Right!
"Hi, Norrell. I 'm calling to see when can we get together to make plans for the fundraiser." Norrell wasn't in the mood for company, she just wanted to be left alone.
"I'm not sure, Carly. I'm not feeling very well. In fact I really don't think I'm going to be able to do it. I'm just not up to it," Norrell said as she reached for her smokes.
"But Norrell, we're counting on you. We need your help. You know so much about raising money, and you have so many connections." Norrell was beginning to feel perturbed, she didn't like being pressured.
"Tell you what, how about I write you a check, say for $50,000.Wouldn't that help you out some?" Carly was stunned, her best friend's behavior just wasn't right.
"Well, sure Norrell, if that's what you really want to do."
"Yes, you bet your sweet ass it is, and if you hightail it over here, I'll write the fucking check right now." Norrell felt like yanking the phone out of the wall. She didn't want to be bothered with Carly, Reuben, or anyone. Hell, she didn't even want to be bothered with herself at times.
" Okay, sure. I'm on my way," Carly said, only to realize that she was talking to herself. Norrell had hung up the phone. Did she just curse at me? She thought with a frown on her face.
Within minutes, Carly rang the doorbell. Norrell came to the door, checkbook in hand. She didn't even invite Carly in. "Who should I make this out to?"
"Um..." Carly had a little trouble getting the name out. "I'm sorry... you can make it out to, Our Kids For Life Foundation." Norrell held a cigarette in her mouth while she made out the check, her eyes squinting from the smoke. Carly watched her in awe.
Norrell was doing the very thing that she'd once loathed. This same woman had raised half a million dollars for the Black Lung Cancer Society just a few years ago. How could this be? Had her friend lost her mind?
Norrell tore the check from the book, gave it to Carly, and then took a long drag from her cigarette. "Hope this helps out. If it's not enough, let me know. There's more where that came from." Norrell said nonchalantly.
Norrell stared at Carly in a way that made her uncomfortable. Carly started to walk away, and then she looked back and said, "Are you okay Norrell?"
